Experiential learning by Donovan Mann - EDAC 634 Assignement 4

EDAC 634 Assignment 4

Goal: The goal of this program is to aid non-traditional college students in overcoming mental blocks they have to learning because of past experiences.

Objectives: Upon completion of this master class, students should be able to:

  1. Understand how emotions can impact one's ability to learn.

  2. Comprehend reflective practices in order to highlight the positives of their past experiences.

  3. Be able to apply reflective practice in their own life.

Rationales: The ideas of Boud, Keogh and Walker, and Beard and Wilson along with reflective practices will be used to guide this course.

  1. Boud, Keogh, and Walker’s work states that learners must work through negative feelings that have arisen and set those aside eventually while retaining and enhancing the positive feelings. If not, learning can become a block.

  2. Boud, Keogh and Walker’s model includes a reevaluation stage, aiming to to use this experience as a way of getting ready for new experiences and new learning.

  3. Beard and Wilson note that the affective (mental) domain can be seen as the provided foundation for learning.

  4. Reflective learning allows us to make judgements based on our experiences and prior knowledge in complex and murky situations.

Design:

ACTIVITY

RATIONALE

Provide attendees with a lesson on Boud, Keogh and Walker, Beard and Wilson’s, and reflective practices. Presentation to be used here.

Providing a foundation for the ideals so the attendees have a better understanding of the methods being taught.

Provide a piece of paper and have them write down a moment they had a negative experience in learning, how they felt during that moment, and then reevaluate the experience to find the positives.

Boud, Keogh and Walker’s original model consisted of three such stages (return/replay moment, think upon the emotions of the experience, and reevaluate in order to prepare for new experiences). Reflection-on-action is also used here.

Hand out a worksheet and have attendees write down positive things about themselves and their abilities.

Beard and Wilson’s note that people need to have confidence in their abilities along with positive self-esteem, support from and trust in others.

Finish with a short video regarding reflective practices in a practical setting.

An additional resource for attendees to view relative to the topics at hand.
