Kolb’s Learning Cycle was used to design this training. The main ideas of Kolb’s Learning cycle that were used are:
Concrete Experiences – the learner is open and willing to try new experiences.
Reflective Observation – the learner is able to view the experience from a variety of perspectives.
Abstract Conceptualization – based on what the learner observes they can create integrative ideas and concepts.
Active Experimentation – the learner will be able to use the ideas and concepts in practice using decision-making and problem-solving skills.

Modules | Content | Activity | Rationale |
Module 1 Presentation of Information | Participants will learn about what an active shoot situation may entail, key terms related to the situation, as well as the importance of preparedness. | Information will be delivered to participants through an oral presentation with visual aids. | Participants have decided to participate in this course which will offer them a new experience. They are willing to learn something new.
|
Module 2 Mental Preparedness | Participants will explore the Arc of Survival. In this module, they will learn the importance of decisive action and increase their muscle memory responses. | Participants will work in groups to discuss and share the content of the module. | By working in groups, the participants can engage in reflective observation by considering the perspectives of others. |
Module 3 Simulation | Participants will learn about Run, Hide, and Fight. This content will help them to see what to do in an active shooter situation. | Participants will rehearse Run, Hide, and Fight in a simulation-type experience. They will be able to assess routes and strategies for simulated situations. | Participants will be able to use what they learn in the simulations to help them integrate the ideas and concepts into real-life applications. |
Module 4 Applying Information and Preparedness to Practice | Participants will explore examples of an Emergency Action Plan and learn about the key components of one. | Each participant will use the information and experiences from all four modules to create an Emergency Action Plan for their organization. | Using their decision-making and problem-solving skills, participants will be able to use the information and experiences from this training and apply them to practice. |
